This booklet is one in a series of 29 booklets documenting workshops held at the Fifth International Conference on Adult Education and provides an overview of the major issues discussed at a session on indigenous peoples and adult education. It addresses issues concerning the education and rights of indigenous peoples and some of the challenges they face in the future. Six key recommendations are presented, asserting that: basic educational competencies in indigenous languages should be a fundamental element of educational systems; bilingual intercultural education should be included in national adult learning systems; in a civil society adult learning empowers all communities including indigenous communities; indigenous peoples should participate in the design of adult learning opportunities and materials; curricula should address indigenous peoples’ cultural heritage and history; and that further research should be undertaken to investigate the realities of indigenous peoples’ lives.
